Anime Review of Ouran High School Host Club

Hayley Kilday

Staff Reporter

Haruhi Fujioka is a common girl with a scholarship to a private school known as Ouran High School. While looking for a quiet place to read Haruhi stumbles upon Music Room 3, and unknowingly, Ouran Acadamy’s Host Club. A club that consists of six boys (Tamaki Suoh, Mitsukuni “Honey” Haninozuka, Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin, Takashi "Mori" Morinozuka, and Kyoya Ootori) with too far much time on their hands entertaining girls who also have far too much time on their hands. Haruhi quite literally stumbled into the Host Club when she tripped and broke a vase worth an estimated 8 million yen, starting her adventures with the Host Club.

Throughout almost the entire first episode, Haruhi is seen as a boy due to her short hair and baggy clothes. It is only until water gets spilled on her while entertaining a guest and is getting changed into another uniform that the Host Club figures out that she is in fact a girl. Within the first couple of episodes, shenanigans ensue that involve the Host Club trying to keep Haruhi’s secret and the Host club’s president tries to unsuccessfully woo her.

All of the characters go through tremendous amounts of growth by the end of the show, which unfortunately only has one season with twenty-six episodes. They all unlock a side of themselves that even they did not know that they had. When each of the characters have their moment to shine, finding themselves, it truly is this beautiful moment to see what they have gone through and it puts it into perspective that this somewhat goofy show can have these really deep and empowering moments.

Along with all of these deep moments comes this fantastic theme song, called Sakura Kiss, really suits the show and you can not help but to sing along to it. It is very catchy and no matter what kind of episode it is going to be, it never fails to set the mood or get you excited for what is to come.

Overall, Ouran High School Host Club is a lovely show that shows the struggles of a girl trying to find her way not only at a new school, but one that comes with a completely different world that she has ever been a part of. The show is unlike any other and it would be a fun one to watch with the whole family.
