A Review of YOU on Netflix

Vanessa Morales

Staff Reporter

How would you define love? Some might say it is the purest energy in the world, while some may not believe in it at all. The Netflix show YOU, features how a bookstore manager named Joe seeks love and expresses it in an obsessive, deadly way.

The series was based on a real book called YOU, written by Caroline Kepnes. While the series extends what the book featured, the series does a great job at keeping the story stable.

I would define YOU as probably one of mine, if not my favorite Netflix series. What really glued me to the screen was the fact that the show is shown from Joe's perspective so whenever he acts out and does immoral things, it almost makes you want to sympathize with him despite knowing he is in the wrong. The show’s dynamic has an almost creepy atmosphere and the actors portray all the characters realistically so it helps make you feel like you are watching a true story unfold. The show features two seasons and the story connects incredibly well. Especially when it comes to twists and turns.

In the first season, Joe feels intrigued by an aspiring poet named Guinevere Beck. Joe begins to then stalk Beck and find out everything he can to get closer to her. In the second season, the series takes darker turns and starts to reveal more of Joe’s past and why he is the way he is. I will not spoil too much in case you so happen to get curious about the series. If you happen to watch it and enjoy it, look forward to a new season that has been announced to release in October of 2021.

I watched the series around the time it first came out and I was hooked. The series has a great way of showing the psychological minds of those with deep rooted fears and trauma, making them all appear very real and almost relatable at times. Many characters in the series are flawed and I like that about the series because it is not everyday you find a popular series with realistic dynamics. I am all caught up with the series and look forward to Season 3.

Whether you decide to read, watch or maybe neither, I will still adore the series and am excited to see just how the story ends.
