In American Horror Story, season four, Freak Show, Elsa ( the woman in charge), rescued people with various disabilities from places with all of these ‘freaks,’ and made a circus where people would come at night and watch them perform a special act showcasing their disability. The season starts with Elsa taking interest in the siamese twins she saw in the newspaper. She then went to the hospital to visit them in hopes they would join her circus. They were supposed to be the act to peak the interest of the public and completely sell out the seats. The twins, Dot and Bette, (Bette the one on the right side and Dot the one on the left) agreed to go to the circus with her. When they arrive they are confronted by all of the other freaks to greet her and welcome her to the circus. They get straight to business and try to figure out what they are going to perform for the audience. Bette says she can sing even though she really can not Her sister, Dot, gets tired of hearing Bette and starts to sing after some convincing. Dot ends up being really good at singing. They had their singing act now, they just needed to rehearse the song.
During all of this, there are children being kidnapped by a killer clown. However, the clown never kills the kids; he usually kills the parents and or the siblings. The only thing he actually wants is to make kids laugh. Bette went crazy from people making fun of him and he forgot how to make them laugh. The clown was eventually killed by Mordrake ( the first recorded “freak”) who took pity on Twisty (the clown) after hearing his story so he invited him to join his entourage of damned souls. To fulfill the invitation, Mordrake stabbed and killed Twisty (the clown), freeing his tortured soul and preventing any more potential victims. Twistys accomplice Dandy Mott, a rich white boy who kills his maid (Dora Brown). She was his first victim.
After, he got a taste of murder he went to kill one of the freak’s boyfriends because the freak was cheating on his wife. Dandy has a plan to kill anyone that gets in the way of him marrying the twins. Therefore, after he saw them perform during the show he had his mother (Gloria) buy out the whole auditorium so there were no interruptions. When he set eyes on them he said, “he had never felt the way they made him feel they made him feel complete” when he first met them he offered $15,00 to buy them, they rejected him and stayed in the circus. Elsa was very pleased with them staying since they were the opening act for the show. Elsa in fact learned to hate the twins after Elsa got booed off the stage and wished for Dot to sing. The only thing Elsa wanted in life was to be in the spotlight. She believed the only way to do so was to show off her talent, which she did not possess, and surround her with freaks to make herself look better.
On the flip side, Elsa is missing both of her legs after being cut off due to sexual interactions gone wrong. She hides this by wearing prosthetic legs. In the later episodes, she sells the twins Dandy and Gloria. When Elsa returns to the circus the freaks ask about the twins, she lies and says they left in the night. While at the store one of the freaks sees Dandy buying two of every girl’s products, they make the connection of where the twins are. They send the love interest of Dot, Jimmy, to Dandy’s house to find the twins in a princess dress. Jimmy made the twins decide if they wanted to be with him or stay with Dandy. Bette wanted to stay with Dandy but she said, “ I will always go with my sister.” They went back to the circus and they say that Elsa took them to Dandy because they asked for more, not because they sold them. After the encounter Dot and Bette demanded certain things from Elsa such as, the money from Dandy, a surgeon that would perform a surgery to separate them, and finally 10% of Elsa’s earnings from the Television show.
