A Review of Hazards

Niccijade Reeves-Alhark

Editor-in-Chief

Penelope Scott released her EP, Hazards, on August 27th of this year. The album consists of six tracks. Three of them are new tracks, while the others are updated versions that were made before her two previous albums, The Junkyard 2 and Public Void.

The title track of the EP is 7 O'Clock. It was previously released as a single on July 27th. It is the revamped version of 7:00 p.m. from her Bandcamp EP Goblin Hours. The song is about waking up every day to essentially nothing. Scott yearns for feeling and basic affection, jumping to people who ghost her and risking her life.

My two favorite songs on this EP are Dead Girls and Self Care.

Dead Girls is the third track on Hazards. It is about the constant death of girls and general children around Scott and how it is seemingly celebrated and or glorified. I enjoy this song because it goes over the topics of how people are seemingly only remembered if they are dead. I also like how she talks about being numb to all of the death around her, it is a relatable reflection for many people now, especially with the pandemic.

Self Care is the last track on the EP. It focuses on the concept of self-care, displayed on the Internet and in Scott’s mind. What I love about this song is that the verses are placed on a very impulsive and quick beat. Each verse, especially the first, are making fun of and mimicking the concept of self-care the Internet has created; smearing honey on your face, putting fruit in water, workbooks, etc. I also love how she addresses the fact that a lot of mental issues are thrown the ‘try harder’ card and are ignored or excused with some negative trait like laziness.

Overall, Hazards is a great EP and I enjoyed it greatly.
